Sciatica is a term referring to pain, numbness or tingling traveling from the back and down the leg(s). Purely descriptive in nature, the term does not imply the source of pain. We often see patients in our chiropractic office suffering from sciatic pain. Initial treatment is dependent on proper diagnosis.
True sciatic pain originates from compression of the sciatic nerve, originating from the fourth lumbar nerve to the third, fourth or fifth sacral nerve. Correct diagnosis is dependent on correctly identifying the nerve root in question. Fortunately, the nerve compressed will create a set of symptoms easily recognized by a trained professional. Occasionally a physician will seek additional imaging to reach a correct diagnosis, including an x-ray and possible MRI. Once identified, treatment is rendered in office.
Chiropractic is very successful in the treatment of sciatic pain. Treatment options available in our office include: Cox flexion distraction therapy, EMS, ultrasound, Graston, and most notably manipulation. Often, patients see significant relief with only one treatment. However, a series of 2-12 treatments is often necessary for successful resolution of symptoms.
Home care advice revolves around timely application of heat and/or ice, in addition to proper stretching and strengthening exercises. Exercises and stretches differ for each patient, but often entail McKenzie extension or Cox flexion exercises. Often we find the piriformis muscle is involved, and targeted stretches for this muscle are often incorporated as well.
