Graston & IASTM

Chiropractic Gratson TechniqueScar tissue and adhesions develop at injured sites, decreasing function and prolonging the effects of an injury. Often other injuries occur as a result of your bodies compensation for this decreased function. The Graston Technique is a form of instrument assisted soft tissue massage (IASTM), which is utilized to break up scar tissue, speed healing and increase function. IASTM is a well researched technique utilized by top athletes the world over.

How is the Graston Technique, or IASTM performed?

The technique involves the use of metal tools, as pictured. These tools allow for the detection of excess scar tissue. The doctor’s knowledge of anatomy provides for the effective use of the tools in the break up of scar tissue and proper realignment of the injured tissue. Often the technique is coupled with exercises, heat and ice. Typically, a course of IASTM involves 6-12 visits spaced over a period of weeks. Of course, the duration of treatment will vary depending on the severity of the injury. It is not uncommon to get excellent results with as few as 2-3 treatments.

What conditions are commonly treated with Graston and IASTM?

During the three months both doctors spent learning how to perform Graston, they also learned what conditions respond best to the therapy. Below is a list of conditions the doctors have successfully treated with IASTM:

  • sprains and strains
  • carpal tunnel
  • plantar fascitis
  • tennis elbow
  • golfers elbow / sports injuries
  • knee sprains
  • disc herniations
  • compartment syndromes
  • trigger finger
  • ITB syndromes

Many other conditions have also been treated with the Graston technique by our Longmont chiropractors. One of the best applications in our office has proven to be injury as a result of a car accident. Whiplash and sprains can often plateau with traditional care, IASTM is the catalyst that propels the treatment to that last bit of healing.
