Scoliosis

A complex yet relatively common condition that affects up to 7 million people in the United States alone, scoliosis causes spinal curvature and can result in numerous other complications. At Left Hand Chiropractic Clinic, one of our specialties is Longmont scoliosis treatment.

What Is Scoliosis?Longmont Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a medical term used to describe a condition rather than an actual disease. The term refers to any type of abnormal, sideways curvature of the spine. Most often, scoliosis presents as a lateral curvature of the spine from side to side. It can occur anywhere along the spinal column, and it often causes the spine to take on the shape of a “C”, a backward “C” or an “S.”

Idiopathic scoliosis is most common in children. This simply means that the curvature occurred with no known cause. In adults, degenerative scoliosis, or spinal curvature caused by the degeneration of the facet joints is more common.

In cases of idiopathic scoliosis, the exact cause is unknown, but there are certain factors that we know do not cause this deformity. Carrying and lifting heavy objects, exercise and sports do not cause scoliosis, nor do minor length differences in the legs or sleeping in incorrect positions.

Children and young adults affected by scoliosis typically experience worsening problems as the spine continues to grow. Degenerative scoliosis also gets worse over time in most cases, making it important to seek treatment for a curved spine as early as possible.
